What can you create with two hands and a flat sheet of paper?

Folding has a long tradition, for instance in origami. Today designers, architects and scientists use the hands-on technique as an intuitive approach to finding new forms.
Worldwide, designers and hobbyists are happily sharing instructions through online communities and websites like YouTube. Paper is mostly the starting point, but the ever-evolving technique of folding is also applied to other materials.

Platform21 presents a cross-section of the current developments in the world of folding. On invitation of Platform21, showpiece designer Zoe Bradley installed one of her fantastic one-off dresses, never shown before in the Netherlands. The sculptural dress of folded paper shows the unlimited possibilities of folding.
Architect Sophia Vyzoviti is the author of the books Folding Architecture and Supersurfaces. In Platform21=Folding she explains how the hand and mind coordination of folding leads her to create unpredictable, innovative forms applicable to architecture, fashion and product design. The amazingly constructed shoes of Marloes ten Bhömer literally lift folding to a higher level – one on heels to be precise.

Platform21=Folding runs from 12 August through 30 September, Wednesday through Sunday, 12:00 – 19:00. Entry is free.

Knitted Landscapes

Jan ter Heide en Evelien Verkerk laten overal waar ze komen kleine gebreide objecten achter. Ze vormen een vrolijk of vervreemdend element in het landschap. De kunstenaars maken er daarom foto's van, voordat ze gevonden en meegenomen worden door de toevallige vinders. Deze foto's worden getoond op de expositie Knitted Landscape. Maar in deze tentoonstelling is het vooral de bedoeling dat mensen meebreien. Er is volop wol aanwezig om samen een groot landschap te creëren...

Wearing a black sheep?

New knitwear brand Flocks gives customers details about the individual animals that provided the wool for their sweaters and mittens.

Every item in young Dutch designer Christien Meindertsma’s collection can be traced back to its source. Since one sheep supplies exactly enough wool for one sweater, each sweater is tagged with a specific animal’s ID number, and comes with a certificate: the animal's passport. Information provided includes breed, weight, year and place of birth, and a picture of the sheep. Sweaters are priced from EUR 475.

So far, Meindertsma has only used non-dyed materials, sticking to the natural colours of sheep, rabbits, goats and alpacas. She's planning to use coloured yarn for upcoming collections, and provenance of colours will be included on separate labels. A blue scarf, for example, could be dyed with natural indigo, with information provided about the type of plant the dye was extracted from and where it was harvested. All of this adds up to an appealing story — one that customers can share with friends, and one that (re)connects them with the source of the products they consume. Which makes Flocks a great example of the still made here trend: products that have a sense of place or provenance are coveted by consumers for a variety of reasons, from environmental concerns to shifting perceptions of what constitutes status.

Tentoonstelling van de Franse fotograaf en straatkunstenaar JR. Deze jonge fotograaf bezit de grootste tentoonstellingsruimte ter wereld: hij plakt zijn werk op de muren van steden wereldwijd en trekt hiermee de aandacht van mensen die niet per definitie museumbezoekers zijn. Voor het eerst toont JR zijn werk in Nederland: voornamelijk intrigerende portretten van enorm formaat, in en buiten de muren van Foam alsmede in de stad Amsterdam zelf.

Face 2 Face is gebaseerd op een project dat JR samen met zijn vriend Marco in maart 2007 is begonnen. Hij schoot portretten van Israëli en Palestijnen met hetzelfde beroep en plakte deze portretten in groot formaat zij aan zij, of ‘face to face,’ op beide kanten van de omstreden Veiligheidsmuur in Israël en in acht Palestijnse en Israëlische steden. JR wil hiermee de gelijkenis in expressie van de geportretteerden tonen, alsmede de complexiteit van de situatie.

Philips en Swarovski in technologische Sieraden

Philips kondigde eerder al aan van koptelefoons en USB-sticks mode-items te maken. Het bedrijf sloot een overeenkomst met het Oostenrijkse kristalmerk Swarovski. Resultaat zijn de zogenaande ‘technologische sieraden' of 'Active Crystals'.

De collectie Active Crystals bestaat onder andere uit een "Heart Ware", een USB-geheugenkaart van 1 GB. De kaart heeft een gepolijste roestvrijstalen behuizing met gefacetteerd, asymmetrisch geslepen Silver Shade kristal. Een ander item uit de collectie is de "Icon", een Oortelefoon met gepolijste roestvrijstalen behuizing en zilverkleurige kabel. Met volledig gefacetteerd Silver Shade kristal dat exclusief is geslepen voor deze oortelefoon.

De ‘technologische sieraden' of 'Active Crystals' kun je sinds deze maand bekijken op de website en vanaf augustus kopen in een select aantal winkels.

Experience communism in ostel (Berlin)

At the Ostel guesthouse in central Berlin, visitors can step back in time and experience the aspects of former East Germany. Not only is the hotel completely decorated in styles from the GDR, you can book a night in the "Stasi-suite" -- complete with bugging devices reminiscent of those used by the secret police. Two-person "prefab" apartments or an economy bed in a six-person "pioneer camp" room only costs nine euros. Ostel's Web site promises that, while the deco may be less-than-modern, the mattresses and plumbing are completely up-to-date. DDR prime minister Horst Sindermann is staring to entering hotel guests in the main lobby.

Vormgevers in textiel, ontwerpen producten geïnspireerd door historische en hedendaagse textiel uit het geboorteland van buren, kennissen en cursisten.

De presentatie van het project bestaat uit een 'streetwalk' en een expositie. In de 'streetwalk' presenteren buurtbewoners, cursisten en leerlingen textielproducten en kostuums uit diverse culturen en eigen ontwerpen.

In a Nutshell: Eyeball Living

Doesn’t matter how big your loft is or how much light you’ve got, every so often, you probably get a hankering for something a little more organic.

Tom Chudleigh’s rock-a-bye shelters should feed your need. Inspired by shipbuilding design, the spherical tree houses are built from either cedar strips or fiberglass, and are roughly the size of a 12 by 12 room. And like a boat, the interior of the sphere is conveniently fitted with a small platform in the middle to make it easier for bipeds to maneuver.

From the outside, they look like giant eyeballs. But suspend one of these babies from a few trees and you’ve got your very own bird’s nest, high above the clamor and clatter of the city. Add a DIY suspension bridge and staircase for easy access to your house and you can kiss renting good-bye forever.

The spheres aren’t outfitted with separate rooms, so privacy is at a minimum, but Chudleigh has included a loft, living area, kitchen, portholes, and working front door. The spheres are also equipped with standard power connections to run a microwave, blender, space heater or whatever else you simply can’t live without.

Hung in the old growth forests of Vancouver Island, Chudleigh’s prototypes accommodate weary travelers looking for a place to hang their hats. The “free spirit spheres” are light, but their shells as tough as nuts. So even though you’ll sway as the treetops do, you’ll be safer than a squirrel. And don’t worry about seasickness. The ropes you’re swinging on will absorb most of the movement.

Bio-mimicry that works with nature and human bodies. Space-saving design as cute and convenient as European studios.

Sounds like pretty good reasons not to cut all those old trees down.

Als ontwerper heb je inspiratie nodig om te komen tot nieuwe creaties. Als grote bron van inspiratie geldt tegenwoordig het Internet. En er zijn veel initiatieven waar ontwerpers via het uploaden van beelden op elkaar kunnen reageren en elkaar kunnen inspireren. Het jongste initiatief op dit gebied is "Visuals of the world". Via deze site wordt een poging gedaan om met zijn allen te werken aan de langste website ter wereld.

Ontwerpers, illustratoren en beeldend kunstenaars worden gevraagd te reageren op elkaar. Door de beelden onder elkaar op de site te plaatsen ontstaat een lange visual die je kunt bekijken door eindeloos te scrollen.
